Flatbed vs Step Deck: Which Equipment Do You Need?

May 21, 2026  ·  5 min read  ·  IZY Logistics

Open deck freight — steel, lumber, machinery, construction equipment — doesn't always fit on a standard flatbed. Here's how to know which trailer your load actually needs.

Standard Flatbed

A standard flatbed is a 48 or 53-foot trailer with no sides, no roof, and a deck height of approximately 58–60 inches from the ground. Legal load height with freight is 13'6" maximum in most states.

Best for: Steel coils, lumber, pipe, building materials, equipment under 13'6" tall. Any load that's too long, wide, or heavy for an enclosed trailer but fits within standard height limits.

Step Deck (Drop Deck)

A step deck has two deck levels — a shorter upper deck at the front and a lower main deck that "steps down" behind the front axles. The lower deck sits at approximately 36–40 inches from the ground, giving you ~10 extra inches of usable height compared to a flatbed.

Best for: Construction equipment, agricultural machinery, large vehicles, freight that's 10–11 feet tall. If your load is between 8'6" and 10' tall, a step deck is often the right call.

Quick Decision Guide

QuestionIf Yes → Use
Is freight under 8'6" tall?Standard Flatbed
Is freight 8'6"–10' tall?Step Deck
Is freight over 10' tall?RGN or Permit Load
Does freight need to roll on/off?RGN (detachable neck)
Is freight over 48,000 lbs?RGN or Multi-Axle

Cost Difference

Step decks typically run 8–15% higher than standard flatbeds due to lower equipment availability. RGN loads cost significantly more and often require permits. If your freight is borderline on height, measure carefully — a few inches can save you significant money by staying on a standard flatbed.

Securement Requirements

Both flatbed and step deck loads must comply with FMCSA cargo securement regulations. Steel requires blocking and bracing. Machinery requires chains and binders. All loads need edge protection where straps contact freight. Your broker should confirm the carrier has the correct securement equipment before dispatch.
