What Does a Freight Broker Do? (Plain English Explanation)

2026-07-10  ·  5 min read  ·  IZY Logistics

If you've never worked with a freight broker before, the role can seem confusing. Are they a middleman? Do they drive trucks? How do they make money? This guide explains exactly what a freight broker does — in plain English, without industry jargon.

Step 1: You Tell the Broker What You Need to Ship

You provide the pickup location, delivery location, freight type, weight, dimensions, ready date, and any special requirements (hazmat, temperature control, liftgate, etc.). A good broker asks smart follow-up questions to make sure they find the right carrier for your specific freight.

Step 2: The Broker Sources Available Carriers

The broker searches their carrier network — built over years of relationships — for a carrier who has a truck in the right location, the right equipment, and the right safety record. They check DAT, Truckstop, and direct carrier relationships. This happens in minutes, not days.

Step 3: The Broker Vets the Carrier Before Booking

Before booking, the broker verifies the carrier has active FMCSA authority, the right insurance ($1M+ liability, cargo coverage), a satisfactory safety rating, and no recent cargo theft complaints. Skipping this step is how freight gets stolen or lost.

Step 4: The Broker Manages the Load From Pickup to Delivery

Once booked, the broker monitors pickup, tracks the load in transit, communicates any delays, and handles problems if they arise — flat tires, weather delays, carrier breakdowns. Your job is to have freight ready at pickup time. Their job is everything after that.

Step 5: The Broker Handles Payment and Documentation

The broker pays the carrier within agreed terms and invoices the shipper. They also manage the Bill of Lading, proof of delivery, and any claims paperwork if freight is damaged. This back-office work is invisible when it goes right and extremely painful when it doesn't.
