Q4 is the most expensive and capacity-constrained freight period of the year. Shippers who plan 60–90 days ahead secure capacity at reasonable rates. Those who wait pay premium spot rates — if they can find trucks at all.
Peak freight season typically begins in mid-September as retailers build holiday inventory and runs through mid-January as returns flow back through the supply chain. The week before Thanksgiving and the two weeks before Christmas are historically the tightest capacity periods of the year.
Carrier capacity doesn't expand quickly — recruiting and training CDL drivers takes months. When demand surges in Q4, the same number of trucks chases far more freight, driving spot rates 15–40% above off-peak levels on many lanes.
Lock in contract capacity on your highest-volume lanes by August. Build 3–5 days of extra lead time into your shipping schedule. Pre-negotiate rates with 2–3 brokers so you have backup options when primary capacity fails. Consider drop-and-hook to eliminate detention charges when docks are slammed.
