What Is a TONU Fee?

TONU stands for Truck Order Not Used — here's what that actually means for shippers.

A TONU Fee, Defined

A TONU fee is a charge that applies when a shipper books a truck, and the truck arrives, but the load doesn't happen — the freight isn't ready, the order gets canceled after the truck is already on the way, or the pickup location turns the driver away.

Why This Fee Exists

Once a carrier accepts a load, they turn down other freight to hold that truck and driver available for you. If the load falls through after the truck has already committed time, fuel, and driving hours to it, the carrier has lost that opportunity with nothing to show for it. A TONU fee compensates the carrier for that lost time, not for moving freight that never moved.

When a TONU Fee Typically Applies

Most commonly, this fee applies when a truck arrives at the pickup location and the freight isn't ready, when a shipper cancels after the truck is already dispatched or en route, or when a facility turns a driver away for reasons outside the carrier's control.

How Much Does a TONU Fee Cost?

The amount varies by carrier and by how much notice was given before cancellation. It's typically a flat fee meant to cover the driver's time and the fuel already spent getting to the pickup location, not a percentage of what the full load would have paid.

How to Avoid Getting Charged

Confirming the freight is actually ready before a truck is dispatched, and giving as much notice as possible if a shipment needs to be delayed or canceled, are the two most effective ways to avoid this fee altogether.
