How to Ship Produce Cross-Country: California to the East Coast

May 20, 2026  ·  7 min read  ·  IZY Logistics

The California Central Valley to East Coast lane is one of the busiest and most demanding freight corridors in the country. Here is everything you need to know to move fresh produce reliably.

Key Lanes and Transit Times

LaneDistanceTransit TimeNotes
Fresno CA → New York NY2,900 mi3–4 daysBook 72+ hrs ahead in season
Salinas CA → Chicago IL2,100 mi2–3 daysHigh-volume produce corridor
Bakersfield CA → Atlanta GA2,400 mi2.5–3.5 daysSoutheast distribution
Yuma AZ → Philadelphia PA2,500 mi2.5–3 daysWinter vegetable season
Plant City FL → Boston MA1,400 mi1.5–2 daysFlorida winter season

Temperature Requirements by Commodity

CommodityTransit TempCritical Notes
Strawberries32–34°FMost temperature-sensitive — no exceptions
Lettuce / leafy greens34–36°FEthylene sensitive — do not co-load with ripening fruit
Tomatoes (ripe)50–55°FCold damage below 50°F — most common error
Table grapes30–32°FNear-freezing — pre-cool critical
Citrus38–48°FVariety-dependent — specify on BOL
Avocados (ripe)40–45°FChilling injury below 40°F

Pre-Cooling Is Non-Negotiable

A reefer trailer maintains temperature — it does NOT rapidly cool warm product. If produce loads even 5°F above set temp, the unit runs at full capacity for hours before reaching set temp. Shelf life is already lost by the time you get there.

Rule: Pre-cool product to within 2°F of transit temperature before loading. Request trailer pre-cool to set temp at least 2 hours before loading. Specify both on the BOL.

FSMA Compliance

The FDA Sanitary Transportation rule requires carriers to certify trailer cleanliness, maintain the temperature specified on the BOL, and provide temperature monitoring documentation. Ask your broker to confirm FSMA compliance before dispatch. It is a legal requirement, not optional.

Reefer Capacity in 2026: Book Early

Reefer capacity is 145.5% tighter year-over-year in 2026 per DAT. During California produce season (March–October) last-minute reefer loads are either unavailable or carry 20–35% premiums. Book 72+ hours ahead minimum. For recurring shippers, contract rates with guaranteed capacity are strongly recommended.
