A reefer trailer maintains temperature — it does NOT rapidly cool warm product. If produce loads even 5°F above set temp, the unit runs at full capacity for hours before reaching set temp. Shelf life is already lost by the time you get there.
Rule: Pre-cool product to within 2°F of transit temperature before loading. Request trailer pre-cool to set temp at least 2 hours before loading. Specify both on the BOL.
The FDA Sanitary Transportation rule requires carriers to certify trailer cleanliness, maintain the temperature specified on the BOL, and provide temperature monitoring documentation. Ask your broker to confirm FSMA compliance before dispatch. It is a legal requirement, not optional.
Reefer capacity is 145.5% tighter year-over-year in 2026 per DAT. During California produce season (March–October) last-minute reefer loads are either unavailable or carry 20–35% premiums. Book 72+ hours ahead minimum. For recurring shippers, contract rates with guaranteed capacity are strongly recommended.
